S/V ORYOKI is an Edenton, NC based 1984 Witness 35 For Sale By Owner. This owner requires financial settlement only. No trades.
Catamarans, we all know, have two hulls. The Witness 35 is no exception, but she is exceptional in that she is really two boats in one. With her 2′-2″-inch draft, the Witness 35 is the perfect gunkholer, letting you poke about in the bays, backwaters, and byways of the world where even centerboard-equipped monohulls can’t go. A new world of cruising grounds and isolated anchorages will open up for you. Not many of your monohull friends will be able to follow you into three or four foot depths.
Because of the tremendous forces the wind and sea apply to catamarans, we who build the Witness 35 feel that construction techniques and practices must be of the highest standards. This will not only guarantee that your yacht will protect you when the wind pipes up, but will protect the value of your investment over the years.
The hand-laid, one-piece hulls have substantial thickness at the shoes, tapering to thinner sections at the sheer. PVC structural foam sandwich construction stiffens and insulates the hulls throughout the accommodations area.
The deck and bridge deck are also cored with structural foam to provide additional stiffness, insulation, and positive flotation. Naturally, all bulkheads and floorboards are bonded to the hulls for added strength and rigidity.
Under both power and sail the Witness 35 will please the most demanding yachtsmen. Her 625 square feet of working sail area will keep her footing in light breezes, and, as the breeze freshens, you will experience acceleration and speed that monohull sailors will never know. Tacking, even in a zephyr, is straightforward—no need to back the jib as in lesser performing designs.
Running rigging, including halyards, leads to the large, comfortable cockpit to make sail handling an easy, single handed operation. And when hard on the wind, twin dagger boards, combined with hull shapes, allow very little leeway.
The helm is extremely well balanced, responsive, and precise under both power and sail. The articulated engine makes docking and maneuvering in tight quarters a pleasure. The Witness 35 will turn in her own length and, most unusual for any sailboat, will hold a straight course in reverse. Yet, in addition to the advantages of coastal cruising, the Witness 35 is a true passage maker. She will sail you across the oceans of the world with safety, comfort, and surprising speed.
Full Disclosure
- During the better part of my lifetime I have lived, sailed, repaired and built a number of sailing craft. I have owned Oryoki since 2005 and spent these many years upgrading and improving her. My Mate and I have enjoyed our travels aboard. Since the passing of my Mate, much of the joy of sailing has gone with her. Advancing age has dulled my mind and sapped my energy as well.
- Time to end my trick at the wheel, swallow the anchor and take refuge in Fiddlers Green or the comfort of a rocking Lazy Boy.
- Some of the images I have posted show her canvas work at her prime. Time and the sun has taken its toll. Some restitching, some zippers need replacing, the sail cover needs replacing. Some paint and ding filling on the hard top and re-bedding of the toe rails is in order as well as some of the windows. If you don't enjoy fixing them, you better be rich.
- Oryoki is a pleasure to sail. Her shoal draft will take you into little coves where only the ducks and Blue Herons will be found. And should you find yourself having to beat to weather, her high bridge deck just about eliminates the pounding sometimes associated with cats. Her enclosed cockpit makes fair sailing even in foul weather. She dries out well and sits upright and level on her mini keels. Nice to know should you find yourself aground on a falling tide. (Some say if you have never run out of water you've never sailed. ) And should you be bouncing off the bottom you'll be grateful for the heavy layup. Time To haul? Her 2'2" draft makes her an easy boat to careen for a quick scrub. Or haul? Her 17'beam makes finding a yard an easier chore.
- Blue Water sailing? One of her sister ships is touring Europe and the Med, another in New Zealand.
- Did I mention the Galley? Simmering a sauce, baking bread or grilling a fish the Force 10 stove is a Chef's delight. Ample storage for all things culinary for a day trip or longer. Water conserving foot pumps leave both hands free to do the job.
- Whether you are looking for your first boat or your last, Thank you for your consideration. Whatever choice you make, I'm certain it will be the right one.
