2013 Leopard 48 ‘White Wings’: A Proven Chesapeake Cruiser

A well-optioned four-cabin Leopard 48 in Annapolis, upgraded for serious off-grid cruising with lithium, solar, and thoughtful owner mods.

Bill Regan of Catamaran Central welcomes us aboard S/V WHITE WINGS, a 2013 Leopard 48 lying just outside Annapolis, Maryland. In the walkthrough, he frames her as a well-outfitted and proven cruiser — a boat that has clearly been lived on, thought about, and steadily improved by an owner who understands what matters offshore.

Deck and Cockpits

The tour begins where every Leopard tour should — at the signature forward cockpit, with its sliding coach-roof hatch and forward door that pulls a breeze straight through the salon. Dolphin seats sit on the bows, a bowsprit carries the Code Zero, and the recently serviced and recovered genoa is ready to fly. Recessed hatches make the side decks easy to walk, and the standing rigging has been replaced — a meaningful reassurance for a 2013 boat.

Aft, the cockpit seats a crowd around the table, and the owner has cleverly modified the reversible seat so it lifts out to reveal storage in the locker that once held the life raft. That raft has been sensibly relocated to the coach roof. A Kariba dinghy with a Yamaha 25hp four-stroke rides on the Leopard’s stout davit system, controlled by a rocker switch at the helm.

Systems That Justify the Miles

Below the surface, this is where White Wings earns her keep. Twin Yanmar diesels drive sail drives fitted with oil expanders to protect the seals, and alternators feed a 1,200 Ah Relion lithium bank tucked under the salon bench. Victron does the heavy lifting throughout: a Quattro 5000 inverter, BlueSolar MPPT controllers for the large coach-roof array, Orion DC-DC charging, and a Centaur charger for backup.

A Spectra watermaker, Northern Lights generator, Cruisair air conditioning with soft starts (so units can run from batteries at anchor), and Starlink round out a genuinely modern off-grid package. A standout upgrade is the separate hydraulic autopilot, plumbed independently of the chain steering — a real offshore redundancy if the chain ever fails.

Interior and Layout

This is the four-cabin Family Layout, and the owner has used the extra volume smartly. The galley has been upgraded with an induction cooktop, convection microwave, an Isotherm side-by-side fridge/freezer, and drawer storage for plates and provisions. There’s a SodaStream plumbed in, a nav desk, and a TV in the salon. The starboard hull forward cabin has a walk-in shower, a Splendide washer/dryer, and another Isotherm unit; the port side offers Jack-and-Jill heads and generous hanging storage. Escape hatches have been professionally glassed in for peace of mind.

By Bill Regan

Bill has been a yacht broker for over 13 years and in that time has sold everything from deck boats to schooners…and a lot of catamarans.

He got bitten by the sailing bug on his honeymoon in Jamaica when the local Watersports instructor pushed him off from the beach with the helpful advice of “Don’t go to Cuba!” Shortly thereafter he purchased his first boat in upstate NY, an O’Day 17, and spent the next few years learning on local lakes.

In 2010, Bill and his wife, Trisha, made the drastic change from Albany, NY to Key Largo, FL, and never looked back. The next few years saw them living aboard, delivering boats, cruising The Bahamas and East Coast, working in the Watersports industry and attaining a 100-ton USCG Masters license with sailing endorsement.

Bill has spent time aboard boats throughout the Caribbean, including a trip through the Panama Canal. Recently, he embarked on a voyage that took Trish and his daughter, Finley, from Clearwater, FL back through The Keys to The Bahamas and up the coast to their new port in Baltimore, MD.

For the past 7 years, he worked for The Moorings and Leopard Catamarans. As a boat owner and cruiser, Bill has outfitted and upgraded his own boat and is happy to share his experiences.

Bill has extensive experience doing just what his clients are setting out to do: making big life changes and taking on a lifestyle that is challenging yet rewarding beyond measure. He is always grateful to have a part in making his clients dreams come true. Bill is happy to speak to you about making your cruising dreams a reality, and he has firsthand knowledge of living aboard with a child.

When not sailing his Jeanneau 44i, Bill can be found playing guitar or planning his family’s next adventure.
