2024 St Francis 460 Hybrid ‘Carolina Red’: A Bluewater Cat Built for Sailors

A South African–built performance cruiser blending carbon construction, hybrid propulsion, and world-cruising range.

There are catamarans built for the charter trade, and there are catamarans built for sailors. The 2024 St Francis 460 Hybrid S/V Carolina Red, presented by Captain Will Miller of The Multihull Company from her berth in Deltaville, Virginia, sits firmly in the latter camp. Born in South Africa and finished with the meticulous craftsmanship that has made St Francis Marine a benchmark name in performance cruising cats, she’s a yacht conceived for owners who want to sail hard, live comfortably, and go anywhere.

Built Strong, Built Light

At 45 ft 10 in overall with a 26 ft 3 in beam and a shoal 4 ft 2 in draft, the 460 balances offshore muscle with the ability to tuck into thin-water anchorages. Displacement is a touch over 30,000 lb, and her hulls are fully wrapped in carbon fiber with reinforced strong points. The entire structure uses vinyl-ester resin infused Corecell foam sandwich construction — light, stiff, and durable. Below the waterline she carries four coats of epoxy primer with a copper-coat antifouling; above, an Awlgrip Matterhorn White finish with a royal blue boot stripe.

Reverse wave-cutter bows reduce pitching, and her 71 ft mast clearance and considered weight distribution ease motion at sea. The foredeck features Dyneema-netted trampolines, three watertight sail and ground-tackle lockers, an integrated anchor deployment system, and a deployable sunshade for lazy days at anchor.

A Cockpit That Lives Like a Salon

Step aboard and the cockpit reads as a true outdoor living room: Flexiteek flooring, Sunbrella Spectrum denim cushions, a convertible dining table that drops to form a sunbed, a Kenyon electric grill, a SnoMaster slide-out fridge/freezer, and an Isotherm clear ice maker tucked beneath the helm seat. A carbon-reinforced hardtop bimini and full mesh-and-Isinglass enclosures make the space usable in any weather. At the transoms you’ll find a freshwater shower, rod holders, and a powerful davit system for the carbon-reinforced Sea SUV 360 tender with its 20 hp Suzuki.

A Serious Sailing Wardrobe

The 460 is built to sail, and her rig reflects it. A Sparcraft double-spreader aluminum mast and boom carry a full North Sails wardrobe: a fully-battened square-top UltraX Dyneema mainsail with three reefs, a furling Dyneema genoa, a striking red G2 gennaker for off-wind work, a Code 65 storm sail on its own electric furler, and a dedicated storm jib. Hardware is top-shelf throughout — Antal cleats, Profurl furlers, Dyneema running rigging, line drivers, and five electric Harken winches. The helm features a hydraulic steering system with a 32 in stainless destroyer wheel, dual rams, emergency tiller access, and Jefa rudder bearings. Navigation runs on a full B&G suite with a Zeus MFD, radar, AIS, wind instruments, and a mast-mounted camera.

Hybrid Propulsion and Energy Independence

Under power, Carolina Red pairs twin Yanmar 57 hp diesels with Hybrid Marine electric propulsion — quiet motoring when you want it, diesel range when you need it. Fuel capacity is 300 L per side, and feathering Hydroline propellers minimize drag under sail. The electrical architecture is genuinely next-generation: eight 400 W solar panels (3,200 W total) managed by Victron SmartSolar controllers, Victron Quattro and MultiPlus inverter/chargers producing 110 V and 220 V, a CZone digital switching system with touch display and wireless control, and 48 V, 24 V, and 12 V battery banks including six high-capacity MG lithium batteries for the house system.

Interior salon and galley of the St Francis 460 Hybrid with Corian countertops and maple cabinetry

Interior Craftsmanship

Inside, the salon and galley showcase Corian Pearl Gray countertops, gray-oak vinyl flooring, and maple cabinetry with a matte finish. The salon table converts to a double berth, and panoramic UV-protected Armor Glass windows keep the space bright and connected to the water. A Samsung 43 in flat-screen anchors the entertainment. The galley features a Kenyon four-burner induction cooktop, a Bosch convection microwave/oven, two-drawer Isotherm refrigerators and freezers, and a UV-filtered drinking water tap.

The three-cabin layout gives the owner the entire starboard hull — queen berth, desk, lounge, utility room with washer/dryer and watermaker, and a large head with an oversized shower. Two guest cabins in the port hull each have queen berths and private heads with separate showers. Every cabin has Oceanair blinds, Sirocco fans, dimmable LED lighting, and Webasto reverse-cycle climate control.

Safety and Connectivity

Offshore readiness includes a VIKING 8-person liferaft, EPIRB, flares, drogue, radar reflectors, jacklines, engine-room fire suppression, redundant bilge pumps, CO2 monitors, and manual backups. A Barnacle security system and Starlink Gen 3 keep her connected and protected worldwide.

Market Snapshot

The St Francis 460 remains a rare sight on the brokerage market — a reflection of how tightly held these boats tend to be.
