Aboard S/V LASAI: A Walkthrough of the Balance 442

Zee Kalinic tours the smallest of the Balance catamarans, where a swing-down helm, self-tacking rig and a surprise "mini spa" all live on a 44-foot platform.

The Balance 442 is the newest and smallest model in the Balance range, and in this quick walkthrough Zee Kalinic makes the case that the shrink in length hasn’t cost the boat any of the family’s signature ideas. Chief among them is the Versa Helm — the pivoting helm station that drops the skipper down into a protected position when the weather turns nasty, then swings back up for sailing mode.

“In the lower position visibility remains excellent, 360 all around,” Zee explains, while the raised setting gives clear sightlines to the sails with a sunbimini overhead and all instruments, controls and winches within reach. It’s a genuinely dual-purpose arrangement rather than a compromise between two.

Simple to sail, easy to service

The sail plan is deliberately uncomplicated: a big main plus two furling headsails with a self-tacking jib. Every line leads to the cockpit apart from the daggerboards and the furlers, which are controlled from the sidedecks, and all rope tails disappear into rope boxes so the cockpit stays uncluttered. Sturdy handrails run the length of the boat, and the boom carries its own grab rail that doubles as a handhold when flaking the main.

Some of the nicest touches are the quiet ones. Ventilation is drawn into the cabins through the wet locker, so fresh air gets in while rain stays out. The solar panels sit in molded boxes that allow passive cooling and improve output. Service points — water maker, inverters, electrical panel — are laid out for easy access.

Living aboard

Cabinetry is offered in a range of colors and materials, and the tour highlights a convertible office that folds out into a wide double berth, generous stowage throughout, and what Zee calls the boat’s “mini spa” — one of the 442’s bigger surprises. The saloon and galley are pitched squarely at feeling like home.
