S/V GhostRider: A 2006 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 49 Walkthrough

New standing rigging, an ICW-friendly rig and a convertible four-cabin layout make this shoal-draft cruiser a serious East Coast contender.

Tom Harney of Jordan Yachts keeps the introduction simple: “Welcome aboard.” What follows is a brisk but thorough tour of S/V GhostRider, a 2006 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 49 that has clearly been cruised, cared for and updated with intent.

Two details stand out immediately for anyone planning to work the East Coast. The first is a shoal draft of 5’4″, which opens up thin-water anchorages that deeper-keeled 49-footers have to admire from a distance. The second is the ICW 64-foot mast — sized to clear the Intracoastal Waterway’s bridges — paired with brand-new standing rigging installed in 2025. A new boom vang went on in 2024, and the foredeck carries a 12-volt windlass over a deep anchor locker.

Cockpit and deck

All control lines lead aft to the cockpit, where twin helms flank a large fold-up dining table. Big port and starboard cockpit lockers swallow gear, and the sugar-scoop transom makes dinghy and swim access easy. A generous bimini and dodger provide shade and shelter for long passages.

Below decks

The interior is finished in rich teak, cooled by three reverse-cycle air conditioning units. The galley to port is genuinely cruise-capable: a freezer, top- and bottom-loading refrigeration, double stainless sinks, a four-burner propane stove with oven, microwave and plenty of counter and locker space. Opposite, the nav station has an opening chart table, the AC/DC panel and inverter controls.

Accommodation is unusually flexible. The large aft stateroom can be divided into separate port and starboard cabins, while the two identical forward guest cabins can be combined into one big stateroom. There’s an aft port head with shower plus port and starboard heads forward. Power comes from a 76-horsepower Yanmar diesel.
