S/V SCOUT: A Circumnavigated 1992 Privilege 482 Finds Port

Three and a half years around the world later, this five-cabin Privilege catamaran comes ashore with lithium power, a full-size washer and a tool room full of spares.

Some boats are sold before they’ve really been anywhere. S/V SCOUT is not one of them. The owners open their walkthrough video with a simple line that reframes everything that follows: after three and a half years and a circumnavigation — with, as they put it, some extreme adventuring along the way — they’re back in the States and ready to find this 1992 Privilege 482 her next owner.

The bones are classic Privilege: 48 feet of length, a generous 27-foot beam, five cabins and four heads. What makes the tour worth watching is how thoroughly the boat has been set up for people who actually live aboard and cross oceans, rather than weekend from a slip.

A salon built for a full crew

The main deck is bright and open, with two distinct seating areas and a table with pull-out storage. An extra-large Dometic freezer sits in the middle of it all doing double duty as a coffee table — the kind of practical compromise that only comes from long passages and long provisioning lists. Tucked aboard is a full-size Miele washing machine, which the owner describes as non-negotiable for setting sail.

The galley is a genuine cooking space: abundant counter area and a big double-basin sink. More interesting is what powers it. SCOUT carries a completely updated electrical system — 2,600 watts of solar, 1,000 amp-hours of lithium batteries and a 3,000-watt Victron MultiPlus II inverter. The practical upshot, as the video demonstrates, is that household appliances (a Vitamix, a Breville toaster oven, a Nespresso machine) run without firing up a generator.

Five cabins, and one clever conversion

The owner’s suite offers ample closet space and a walk-in shower stall, and has been recently retrofitted with new wall and ceiling panels. A guest cabin shown in the tour is a study in liveaboard detailing — custom built-in storage, teak window trim and a hatch over the berth for stargazing. Every cabin aboard has received a new custom 11-inch organic foam and innerspring mattress, and this one also has a walk-in shower.

The fifth cabin sits in the nacelle, straight off the salon — compact, charming, and pitched as ideal for kids or crew, with its own sink, a large closet and built-in shelving. Meanwhile the starboard aft cabin has been converted into a proper tool room, complete with storage, a deep inventory of spares and a composting head. It can be returned to a berth if the next owner prefers.

Topside, the sunken cockpit is the boat’s social heart: two tables, extensive bench seating with storage beneath, and two deck-level lounging areas, all set low enough to keep crew secure and dry when the weather turns.
