In 2002 Knysna Yachts set out to become a boutique builder for high quality, semi-custom catamarans. Led by four partners: marketing director Dries van Rooyen, and Laurie Gardiner, Kevin Fouche and Elli Peinke. Building on the legacy of the South African catamaran industry, they purchased the tooling for the Angelo Lavranos designed St. Francis 44 hulls, Knysna changed the cabin and interior layout and the weight balance to launch their own take on the cruising catamaran. They opened a 2,500 square metre, state-of-the-art factory in Knysna, South Africa. In 2010 they redesigned and lengthened the 440 with Angelo Lavranos to create the 480 / 500.

Aboard S/V Seaducer: A 2013 Knysna 480 in Preveza

Most cruising catamarans pick a side: volume or performance. The Knysna 480 has spent more than a decade quietly arguing that you don’t have to choose, and S/V Seaducer — a 2013 example lying in Preveza, Greece — makes that case as clearly as any boat in the class. Listed by Will Miller, she’s a semi-custom blue water cat built in the South African coastal town of Knysna, from which the yard takes its name. A design that has aged well The hull comes from naval architect Angelo Lavranos, and the walkthrough spends real time on why that matters.…

Inside the Knysna 500SE: A Hand-Built 50 With Everything Aboard

Some catamarans announce themselves from a mile off. The Knysna 500SE is one of them — a low, slanted-window profile that, as the builder’s representative puts it in this walkthrough, draws the anchorage question: “where’s that boat come from?” The video that accompanies this listing is a full guided tour of a Knysna 500SE, filmed at the Annapolis Sailboat Show by cruising couple Craig and Janice of Cruising Off Duty, with Kevin Fouché of Knysna Yacht Company doing the honours. It’s a useful piece of homework for anyone considering S/V BAHATI, the 2018 Knysna 500SE Owner Version listed here with Tony Brewer.…

Knysna 440 Review: Upgraded St Francis 44

In 2002 Knysna Yacht Company (pronounced “Knees-nuh”) set out to become a boutique builder for high quality, semi-custom catamarans. Building on the legacy of the South African catamaran industry, the company purchased the tooling for the Angelo Lavranos designed St. Francis 44 hulls. Then Knysna changed the cabin and interior layout and the weight balance to launch their own take on the cruising catamaran. The Knysna engineers found that the St. Francis 44, a successful cruising design, still had room for improvement in areas of interior volume, cabin height and weight distribution.…
