The Lagoon 500 is a French sailboat that was designed by Van Peteghem/Lauriot-Prevost and first built in 2005. The design was built by Lagoon catamaran in France, from 2005 to 2012 and replaced in the company product line by the Lagoon 52 in 2011.

The luxury Lagoon 500 offers an elegant aft cockpit for lounging and alfresco dining. In many ways the cockpit seems like an extension of the saloon as it is accessed by a huge glass sliding door which when opened makes the salon and cockpit one giant space. There is a wet bar to port, just before you enter the saloon that includes a sink, pressure water and in some cases a 12-volt fridge.

Access to the steering station is via curved steps on either side of the cockpit up to the fly-bridge featured on the Lagoon 500 which sits forward of the hardtop bimini protecting the cockpit from the weather and sun. This ‘flybridge’ level and seated on the full-width moulded bench seat and behind the typically sailing-style helm wheel – everything is at your fingertips. Nothing is done at the mast, there are no winches or cleats; as all lines lead to the flybridge. In effect creating a raised sailing cockpit on top of the cockpit overhang. The effectual nerve center of this Lagoon. This raised helm station is unique in concept and has the very real attraction of ensuring the sailing gear is kept completely separate from the lifestyle aspect. The fly-bridge offers seating for up to six passengers and is the best seat in the house under sail.

The main saloon, located on the bridgedeck between the hulls, offers a huge Salon area! The space is divided conveniently into the separate areas of galley, dining and helm station – without the need for partitions or walls. A dining setting is on the starboard side complete with a ‘four-leaf ’ table which unfolded to easily accommodate 8 – 10 seated guests. when this table is folded up it will then lower and transform into a most congenial ‘coffee table’ setting.

Entering this spacious saloon you are immediately struck by the sense of light and spaciousness. The trademark 14 Lagoon 500 front and side windows, provide natural light, four of which opened to provide good cross-ventilation. They not only offered light and of course panoramic views of the day, but the exterior overhang above all but blocked out direct sunlight; so important in the tropics. The Saloon has two other great features in there, the first being Storage for wet gear, dive bottles, gear and suits is massive, as is the area for the mounting of mechanical peripherals such as gas bottles, dive compressor, water-maker or even a second generator.

You haven’t been aboard a cruising yacht until you have a look at this luxurious supersized catamaran. The nav station on the starboard side of the main saloon has a full set of steering and engine controls as well as ample space for charts and electronics all of which is constructed of Alpi Light Oak panelling and trimming, and laminated Wenge flooring.

The expansive galley is to port boasts a large oven and grill, a refrigerator, and freezer, plus a washer/dryer and additional freezer and refrigerator space. . Having two dining areas and the galley up means that food preparation is social and the cook is not missing any of the fun being had on deck. By any definition the Lagoon 500 offers comfort for up to 12 guests and while she is a big boat she is also an easy boat to sail.

The wide swim platforms in each hull are easily accessed from the cockpit via two shallow steps right down to the water. The steps have lazarettes for stowing snorkel and dive gear and there is a water shower on the port hull. When parked on the marina the Lagoon runs two separate shorepower leads, one for the three-phase for the airconditioning, and the other for the singlephase power throughout the rest of the vessel.

She has a cruising range of around 900nm at nine knots with cockpit seating for eight to 10 adults, a galley of house size proportions, complete with washer/dryer, 140-litre refrigerator, convection microwave, three sinks, microwave, full size four-burner Ariston stove with oven below, plenty of cupboard and drawer storage, and a massive stainless steel bench-top with may I add, a wooden fiddle around it so water doesn’t run everywhere.

The Lagoon 500 has a fractional sloop rig, with a deck-stepped mast, two sets of swept spreaders and aluminum spars. The hulls have raked stems, reverse transoms with swimming platforms, dual internally mounted spade-type rudders controlled by a wheel on a flying bridge and twin fixed fin keels.

S/V Pivot: A Rare Four-Cabin Lagoon 500 Set Up for Family Life

Some walkthroughs open with a spec sheet. This one opens with storage. Standing aboard S/V Pivot, a 2009 Lagoon 500, brokers Brandon and Amber of The Cruisers Company keep coming back to the same idea: this 51-footer feels more like a home than a boat. Having lived aboard their own sailboat for four years with four kids, they know exactly which details matter after the honeymoon period ends — and where cruisers run out of room. The galley sits up in the saloon, but the storage story continues down the steps, where a full counter with cabinetry hosts appliances, a freezer and a washing machine.…
